Quick Facts
Who is Dag-Oerjan Slaaen?
Dag-Oerjan Slaaen is a 36-year-old Norwegian citizen who traveled to Denmark in 2025 with the specific purpose of carrying out violent assaults for payment. He was recruited by criminal masterminds via encrypted communication platforms, which is a growing phenomenon in the Scandinavian underworld, where foreign nationals are used as hitmen to distance the actual masterminds from the crime. Slaaen had no prior relationship with his victims, underscoring the case's nature as a cynical hitman project.
What happened?
On September 22, 2025, Dag-Oerjan Slaaen initiated a violent action in Copenhagen. His first target was an unnamed man at Kiosk Bien on Guldstjernevej in Copenhagen's Northwest District. Slaaen pulled out a firearm and attempted to fire it at the victim, but the murder attempt failed due to technical reasons or intervention. Undeterred, Slaaen continued his mission later that same day. He went to Holmbladsgade in Amager, where he sought out a 22-year-old man. Here, Slaaen succeeded in firing his weapon, hitting the young man in the chest. The shot caused life-threatening injuries and resulted in the victim being paralyzed.
The investigation
The investigation led by Copenhagen Police quickly uncovered a network of accomplices. It emerged that Slaaen did not act alone. Jibreel Yunus Sivori Nielsen was identified as the person who supplied the firearm to the Norwegian. Nielsen was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a separate case. Additionally, a 19-year-old man was charged with assisting in the preparations for the attacks. The police secured crucial evidence through surveillance footage and technical traces from the encrypted services that Slaaen used to receive orders from the unknown masterminds.
The trial and basis for the verdict
At Copenhagen City Court on February 20, 2026, Dag-Oerjan Slaaen was found guilty of two attempted murders under particularly aggravating circumstances. The court emphasized the professional planning and the fact that the crimes were committed as part of a commissioned job for money. Slaaen was sentenced to 13 years in prison and was simultaneously expelled from Denmark permanently. In addition to the prison sentence, he was ordered to pay substantial compensation to the 22-year-old man whose life has been permanently altered as a result of the gunshot injuries.
