Scream Killers: The Teen Murder That Inspired a Docuseries
How two 16-year-olds planned and executed a thrill killing inspired by the 1996 horror film, now the subject of an ABC News Studios investigation
Quick Facts
Cassie Jo Stoddart, a 16-year-old high school junior, was found stabbed to death in the living room of her aunt and uncle's home on the outskirts of Pocatello, Idaho, on 24 September 2006—two days after her murder. The discovery was made by her 13-year-old cousin. What emerged from the investigation was a chilling case of premeditated thrill killing: two teenage classmates, Brian Draper and Torey Adamcik, had methodically planned to murder Stoddart as part of a larger killing spree, inspired by the 1996 slasher film Scream and motivated by a desire for infamy similar to that sought by Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.
The planning stages of the murder were extensively documented. Draper and Adamcik recorded VHS videotapes detailing their plot, functioning almost as a self-produced horror film. They discussed their intentions openly—to kill for pleasure and to achieve notoriety. Among their targets was a "Death List" that included their friends, with Stoddart being their first victim. The pair wore masks when they entered the home where Stoddart was house-sitting, and they deliberately turned the power off and on to terrorize her before the attack. When dogs in the basement began barking, the violence escalated. Adamcik delivered the fatal stabbings—approximately 28 to 30 wounds in total—while Draper participated in the assault.
Following the murder, the two teenagers attempted to destroy evidence. They partially burned and buried clothing, masks, weapons, and the VHS tape itself in Black Rock Canyon. However, investigators recovered the buried materials, and forensic experts managed to restore the damaged videotape. The recovered footage proved devastating: it contained not only documentation of their pre-murder planning but also post-crime confessions. In one segment, Draper is heard saying, "I stabbed her in the throat and I saw her lifeless body."
