Crime Watch Daily: America's Investigative True Crime Series
From cancellation to revival—how a Warner Bros. syndicated program became True Crime News
Quick Facts
Crime Watch Daily launched on September 14, 2015, as an American syndicated investigative news magazine television program. Produced by Telepictures and distributed by Warner Bros. Television Distribution, the series featured investigative reports, real crime stories, and caught-on-tape police and security footage drawn from cases across the United States.
The program's original host for Season 1 was Matt Doran, who guided viewers through high-stakes criminal investigations and emerging crime stories. Beginning with Season 2, Chris Hansen took over hosting duties, bringing his own investigative journalism experience to the series through its third season.
Crime Watch Daily maintained a consistent format designed to engage audiences with multiple crime segments. The Daily Watch List highlighted top crime stories from around the United States in most episodes, keeping viewers informed about active cases and ongoing investigations. The "Bad Seed of the Day" segment profiled specific criminals and their crimes in greater detail, offering deeper dives into individual cases. The Crime Watch Daily Heat Map, featured as a penultimate segment, showcased mugshots and unusual U.S. crime stories tied to thematic connections.
The series ran for three seasons before concluding in June 2018. Despite its cancellation from broadcast television, the program's legacy persisted through multiple channels. Reruns of Seasons 2 and 3 found new life on Ion Mystery beginning in February 2019, allowing international and domestic audiences continued access to the original episodes. Meanwhile, the program's web presence and social media platforms were rebranded as True Crime Daily, and later True Crime News, maintaining audience engagement through digital platforms.
In July 2024, Warner Bros. and Telepictures announced a major revival of the franchise. The revived program launched under the new name True Crime News on September 9, 2024, introducing Ana Garcia as host. Garcia brought substantial credentials to the role, having previously served as a podcast host for True Crime Daily and as a correspondent for Crime Watch Daily, making her a familiar voice to long-time viewers of the original series.
