How Camilla Bjerregaard Aurvig became co-host of Scandinavia's biggest crime podcast
Camilla Bjerregaard Aurvig, a trained graphic designer, co-hosts Mørkeland, the Danish true crime podcast that became Denmark's most-listened-to show by 2020. Since its launch in February 2018, the weekly program has expanded into television and live events.
Camilla Bjerregaard Aurvig never planned to become one of Denmark's most recognizable true crime voices. Trained as a graphic designer, she found her way into podcasting as a "glad amatør"—a happy amateur—bringing genuine curiosity rather than professional credentials to the microphone.
In February 2018, Aurvig and co-host Kristine Sofie Bugbee launched *Mørkeland*, a podcast built on a simple but compelling format: each host brings one criminal case to the table, presenting it to the other and to listeners. The concept proved irresistible. Within two years, *Mørkeland* had become Denmark's most listened-to podcast, a feat that underscored the public appetite for thoughtfully presented true crime storytelling in Scandinavia.
The show's success rested on consistency and accessibility. New episodes arrived every Monday, creating a reliable rhythm that listeners could depend on. Unlike true crime formats anchored by professional investigators or journalists, *Mørkeland* offered something different: two engaged hosts discovering cases together, asking questions as amateurs would, and treating the subject matter with respect rather than sensationalism.
Aurvig's background in graphic design proved valuable beyond her on-air presence. As the podcast gained traction, she and her collaborators expanded into other media. In September 2020, they launched *Ind i mørket*, a hybrid television project featuring eight Danish murder cases. The series paired traditional documentary investigation with visual storytelling—black-and-white illustrations complemented the narratives, creating a distinctive aesthetic that set it apart from conventional true crime television.
This expansion reflected a broader strategy to reach audiences across platforms. While *Mørkeland* remained the flagship, the team recognized that true crime audiences were willing to follow compelling hosts into new formats. *Ind i mørket* featured journalist and former police investigator Sebastian Richelsen working alongside the podcast hosts, bringing investigative expertise to the visual medium.
