IRS Agent Convicted of Double Murder in Virginia Affair Plot
Brendan Banfield found guilty of killing wife Christine and luring victim Joseph Ryan using fake online account
Quick Facts
A Fairfax County jury convicted Brendan Banfield, a former Internal Revenue Service agent, of the aggravated murder of both his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan on February 2, 2026. The guilty verdict marks the culmination of a case that has captivated media attention since the brutal crimes unfolded in February 2023.
The murders were part of a premeditated conspiracy involving Banfield's affair with Juliana Peres Magalhães, the family's 22-year-old Brazilian au pair at the time. Prosecutors portrayed Banfield as the mastermind who orchestrated a lethal trap using deception and violence to eliminate his wife and a man drawn into their scheme.
According to court proceedings, Banfield and Magalhães created a fake account under Christine Banfield's name on FetLife, a fetish-oriented social networking platform. Using this fabricated identity, they lured Joseph Ryan to the Banfield family home under the pretense of a consensual BDSM encounter involving a knife. The setup was calculated to draw Ryan into a situation where he could be killed.
Before the violence erupted, Banfield and Magalhães moved the couple's 4-year-old child to the basement, ensuring the child would not witness the planned murders.
The fatal encounter involved multiple acts of violence. Banfield shot Ryan first, then stabbed his wife Christine repeatedly in the neck while physically overpowering her in the couple's bedroom. As Ryan remained alive despite being shot, Magalhães delivered a point-blank shot to his heart, ensuring his death.
After committing the murders, the two attempted to stage the scene as a violent home invasion gone wrong. This false narrative initially misled investigators, and for approximately one year, Joseph Ryan was assumed to have committed rape and murder before authorities unraveled the truth.
