Through a detailed review of the sequence of events, listeners are introduced to the horrors that took place in the basement in Marcinelle, where Marc Dutroux held his victims captive under inhumane conditions.
The case behind the episode
The case of Marc Dutroux, also known as 'The Beast of Marcinelle', escalated throughout 1995 and 1996, during which several young girls disappeared without a trace. It later emerged that Marc Dutroux along with his wife, Michelle Martin, and accomplice Michel Lelièvre, was behind an organized network of kidnapping and sexual abuse. When the police finally searched Dutroux's property in August 1996, they found the surviving girls Sabine Dardenne and Laetitia Delhez in a hidden basement room. However, the discovery of the survivors was overshadowed by the tragic finding of the bodies of Julie, Mélissa, An, and Eefje, who had been buried on Dutroux's properties. The case triggered a national crisis in Belgium when it became clear that the police and the judiciary had made several mistakes, and that Dutroux had previously been released early for similar crimes.
