The case behind the episode
The investigation into the murder of Jon Tokuhara quickly revealed that he had been having an affair with Joyce Thompson, the wife of teacher Eric Thompson. Surveillance footage showed a figure in a white bucket hat from the brand Quicksilver near the clinic at the time of the crime. Jon Tokuhara had been shot four times in the face with a .22 caliber pistol. Two weeks before the murder, Eric and Joyce Thompson had signed a prenuptial agreement that secured Eric all assets and custody in the event of a divorce, providing police with a clear motive centered around jealousy and financial control.
The first trial against Eric Thompson in August 2023 ended without a verdict, as the jury could not reach a consensus with a 9-3 vote for conviction. In the renewed trial in 2025, the prosecution introduced findings from Cybergenetics TrueAllele software, an advanced form of DNA analysis. This technology established that the probability of the DNA traces on the found hat originating from Thompson was 16.4 trillion times higher than from a random person. On February 25, 2025, Eric Thompson was found guilty of first-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm. He is now serving his sentence at Halawa Correctional Facility in Oahu.
