The real case
The Robert Durst case is one of the most bizarre criminal cases in American history, spanning three decades and three different states. The case began in 1982 when Durst's wife, Kathleen Durst, disappeared under mysterious circumstances in New York. Although suspicion quickly fell on Robert Durst, he was never charged. In 2000, his close friend, Susan Berman, was found murdered in her home in California, shortly before she was to speak with the police about the Kathleen case. The following year, Durst was arrested for the murder of his neighbor, Morris Black, in Texas, but was remarkably acquitted by claiming self-defense, even though he admitted to dismembering the body.
