The Rose Petal Murder: A Pianist's Brutal Crime
How a Juilliard graduate orchestrated the murder of a South Carolina veterinary technician
Quick Facts
Christina Parcell, a 41-year-old veterinary technician, was brutally murdered in her Greer, South Carolina home on October 13, 2021. Her fiancé, Bradly Post, found her unresponsive in the front living room shortly after 11:00 a.m. EST and immediately called 911. What investigators discovered at the scene would shock the community: Parcell had been stabbed more than 30 times in the head and neck area. Her body had been dragged and posed, with rose petals—or deadheaded roses—carefully sprinkled around her, on a console table, and even inside her purse. The staging suggested a deliberate, ritualistic element to the crime.
Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis described the killing as exceptionally violent. "She was brutally stabbed multiple times and murdered in a very violent way," he stated. Initial suspicion fell on those closest to Parcell—her fiancé and her ex-boyfriend, with whom she was engaged in a custody battle. But investigators would soon discover that the perpetrator had no direct connection to the victim.
Zachary David Hughes, a concert pianist and Juilliard graduate known for his ability to memorize Beethoven's sonatas, emerged as the suspect. The connection proved unexpected and chilling: Hughes had been linked to the crime through John Mello, the father of a school-aged child. Mello had provided Hughes with Parcell's contact information in April 2021, explicitly telling him to "harass the s— out of her." In a campaign of harassment, Mello had even mailed nude images to Parcell's neighbors.
Between October 8 and 13, 2021, Hughes and Mello exchanged WhatsApp messages, with Hughes testifying about a premeditated murder plan involving a gun, knife, a gift box, and roses. Critically, Hughes knew that Parcell would be alone at home—she had scheduled a job interview that morning, and her young daughter would be in school. Ring camera footage from a house across the street captured Hughes entering the front door wearing a black hoodie and backpack, moments before the killing occurred.
