Murdaugh: Death in the Family — The Hulu Drama Behind a Real Murder Case
A new scripted miniseries examines the fall of a prominent South Carolina family through the lens of a true crime podcast
Quick Facts
The latest addition to Hulu and Disney+'s true crime roster is 'Murdaugh: Death in the Family,' an eight-episode scripted drama that premiered October 15, 2025, with new episodes dropping weekly on Wednesdays through November 19, 2025. Created by Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr, the series adapts the "Murdaugh Murders Podcast" by Mandy Matney, which documented one of South Carolina's most notorious family sagas.
Jason Clarke stars as Alex Murdaugh, the disbarred lawyer at the center of the case. Patricia Arquette portrays his wife Maggie, while Johnny Berchtold plays their son Paul. The ensemble cast also includes Will Harrison as Buster Murdaugh, Gerald McRaney as Randolph Murdaugh, and Brittany Snow as Mandy Matney, the journalist whose podcast formed the basis for the series.
## The Real Case
On June 7, 2021, Paul Murdaugh, 22, and his mother Maggie Murdaugh, 52, were murdered on the family property in Islandton, South Carolina. Alex Murdaugh was eventually arrested and convicted of both murders. He is now serving two consecutive life sentences.
The case gained particular attention because of Paul's involvement in a February 2019 boating accident that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach. That incident, combined with the subsequent murders and the broader unraveling of the Murdaugh family's legal dynasty, created a narrative that captivated national media attention and spawned the podcast that inspired this series.
## From Podcast to Screen
Mandy Matney's "Murdaugh Murders Podcast" ran from 2021 to 2023 and developed a significant following among true crime audiences. The series adaptation is billed as "partially fictionalized for dramatic purposes," meaning viewers should expect dramatization alongside factual elements of the case.
