13 Years of Terror: The Samantha Stites Stalking Case
How a college acquaintance's obsession escalated into kidnapping, torture, and a chilling bunker discovery
Quick Facts
Samantha Stites, a college student at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, became the target of an obsessive stalker in 2011 when Christopher Thomas, seven years her senior, began appearing at the same Christian student group she attended. What started as chance encounters evolved into a calculated, years-long campaign of surveillance that would eventually lead to kidnapping, torture, and a makeshift dungeon.
Thomas's stalking behavior escalated dramatically over 13 years. He followed Stites to her workplace, the gym, grocery stores, and other intimate spaces in her daily life. Desperate for legal protection, Stites petitioned the court for a personal protection order (PPO) in Grand Traverse County—a request that was denied just months before the kidnapping occurred.
On an October morning in 2022, Thomas's obsession turned violent. He broke into Stites's home and abducted her, transporting her to a storage unit where he had constructed a soundproof bunker—a makeshift torture chamber equipped with a soundproof box and chains. Inside that confined space, Stites was sexually assaulted, raped, and tortured by her captor.
Yet Stites's story is ultimately one of survival and courage. Rather than succumbing to despair or waiting for rescue, she found the psychological fortitude to manipulate her captor into releasing her. Without special training or exceptional resources—as she later noted, describing herself as not a "Superwoman" or CIA operative—she convinced Thomas to let her go and escaped to freedom.
Thomas was arrested and charged with kidnapping, torture, aggravated stalking, and criminal sexual conduct. In December 2023, he pleaded guilty to kidnapping, torture, and aggravated stalking. The criminal sexual conduct charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement. In 2024, he was sentenced in Traverse City to 40 to 60 years in prison—a sentence that effectively means he will spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
