28 Years Hidden: The Discovery of John Sabine's Body
A Welsh garden conceals a decades-old mystery when neighbours unwrap a grim discovery
Quick Facts
On November 24, 2015, neighbours in Beddau, Wales made a shocking discovery that would unravel a 28-year-old mystery. Michelle James, who had been caring for her dying neighbour Leigh Ann Sabine during her final weeks of life, found human remains wrapped in layers of plastic, tin foil, and cardboard in the communal garden they shared. What began as a prank—James believed she had unwrapped a medical skeleton—became one of the most extraordinary cases of concealment in recent British criminal history.
The body belonged to John Sabine, an accountant and Korean War veteran who had vanished without trace in 1997. He had married Leigh Ann Sabine in 1960, and for nearly three decades, his wife had kept his remains hidden, wrapped in 41 protective layers. The body had undergone what investigators described as "chemical mummification," preserved in grey pyjamas within its carefully constructed burial wrapping.
Leigh Ann Sabine died of brain cancer in October 2015—just weeks before the discovery. She took most of the answers to her grave, leaving investigators to piece together a timeline spanning nearly three decades. The formal identification process took a full month after discovery, completed in December 2015. By then, Leigh Ann was already gone, unable to explain how or why she had concealed her husband's body for so long.
The case attracted significant international attention, not least because of its sheer timeline. John Sabine's disappearance in 1997 would have been investigated at the time, yet his body remained undiscovered in the garden throughout those 28 years. The meticulous wrapping and preservation suggested deliberate action—a conscious effort to keep the remains hidden from view.
Michelle James and her friend Rhian Lee were present when the discovery was made, transforming what should have been an ordinary moment in the garden into a turning point in a cold case that had gone unsolved for decades. Their discovery led to formal investigation and closure for those who had wondered what happened to John Sabine.
